www.cityofclintonsc.com tells us:
The City Council voted 6-0 this week to adopt a flag designed by Clinton High School student Patrick Nelson as the official flag of the City of Clinton. Patrick Nelson designed the flag over a year ago as part of a school project after becoming interested in city flags.Albert S. Kirsch, 24 May 2017
The process to adopt the flag was a lengthy one that involved citizens as well as council. City Council formed a committee of council members to review the flag, as well as a community focus group to provide input to the council regarding the flag.
The city, realizing that symbols may mean different things to different people, was careful to make sure that diverse perspectives were included both on the council committee and the citizen focus group.
It is the desire of the council, and the citizens focus group, that this symbol unite various community groups and encourages pride in the City of Clinton.
In the upper left, the crescent pays homage to the South Carolina state flag. The community is represented by the blue field on the left just as the blue of the United States flag represents the union….the national community, the red field to the right represents Clinton area schools…….the Red Devils and the white band represents Clinton’s famous railroad tracks cutting through the center.
You will notice that the blue field has a border of red and the red field has a border of blue. That represents the fact that the community and the schools of Clinton work together, strengthen and assist each other.
Nelson told council that this flag received more votes than any of the other designs. In fact, it was the top pick of 160 of the 280 students participating. He asked that council consider making this flag the official flag of the city of Clinton.
