Senatobia leaders have officially adopted a flag to represent the Five Star City. The Board of Aldermen agreed on the design Tuesday, Aug. 20, after choosing from several options presented by Senatobia Main Street Director/ Community Development Manager Jamie Sowell. "This is an idea we came up with several months ago. We asked around and checked with several city employees including police officers and firefighters and this is the one they liked best,"
Sowell said. "It represents and is reflective of our city’s roots."
The flag design features a white sycamore tree, from which Senatobia earned its name, enhanced by a medium blue background. Senatobia was derived from the Indian word "Senatohoba" meaning white sycamore – a symbol of "rest for the weary." The flag also features a light blue banner at the bottom representing Senatobia Creek where Native Americans rested underneath sycamore trees. Early settler James Peters purchased two sections of land April 13, 1834, from the Chickasaw Nation for $1.25 per acre. The land eventually became a town and was later named Senatobia after Senatobia Creek by Charles Meriwether. Below the white sycamore on the flag are five red stars symbolizing "Citizenship", "Education", "Agriculture", "Industry" and "Recreation" which Senatobia, also known as the Five Star City, adopted as its motto decades ago. Sowell said the new flag will be flown in front of Senatobia City Hall and at the "Welcome to Senatobia" sign next to Interstate 55 alongside the United States and Mississippi flags, among other places.
