For a project required by a leadership class, Kelly Lacey had the idea of
holding a flag design contest for her hometown. The contest, held in March 2021,
was supported by the city and could be entered by past and present residents and
visitors with connections to the town. Of the 29 entries, the winning flag was
selected by a vote of the city council in May. The flag was designed by Troy
Henningson, whose wife is a former resident of Oxford. The flag will be
officially adopted in July 2021.
The elements of the flag, as described
in an article in the Oxford Register newspaper, are as follows:
Red and
Black: The color combination reflects Oxford’s school colors, the annual Oxford
Watermelon Feed, the infamous Old Mill, the rich history of oil in the Oxford
community, and the Black Dog Trail.
Center circle: the shape of an O
denoting Oxford.
Black line on bottom: In reference to Highway 160 going
east to west through town.
Wavy blue line: reflecting the Arkansas River
adjacent to the community.
White star: In a clever piece of design work,
Henningson located the star on the flag relative to the location of Oxford
within the State of Kansas.
Center images: Oxford’s Old Mill, an oil
derrick (again, in reference to the oil found in the area), crossed wheat, and
steam tractor. These all represent the community.
