The flag of Kewanne was designed for a 1949 Junior Chamber of Commerce contest by Richard Thompson, then a senior at Kewanne High School, and adopted by a city ordinance on June 5, 1950. The original design of the flag included a Christian cross, which was apparently removed before the flag was made.
By the early 1990s the flag had largely been forgotten. However, Andy Koehler, a member of the Kewanee post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), found the 1950 city ordinance adopting the flag and 2 copies of the flag. He had 12 copies of the flag made by Martin’s Flag, Co., in Fort Dodge IA, which had made the flag in 1950, and presented them to various local entities, including the VFW and American Legion posts, city hall, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Historical Society.
