Description of the flag

The city's flag is simply the seal, which you've already seen on our website, on a white background.

An image of the flag "in the cloth" shows the colors are somewhat richer than those shown above.

The seal

This is a recent color version of the seal, not the original which was approved by the City some years ago. The tree you see in the top right-hand side, has been modified significantly in the recent version. Originally it was a depiction of the Monterey pine, which is the city's official tree. Behind the tree in the color version, you see the other half of the sun which is pictured on the right-hand side. You will note in the original version, there are no rays of the sun on the right-hand side. I believe this was supposed to have been part of the moon, rather than the sun. I will confirm this with our historian. On the bottom left-hand side are birds of paradise, the city's official flower. I do not currently have information regarding how these were adopted by the City, but our election records do not indicate that our residents were asked to vote on these issues, leading me to believe that the City Council made the decision. Again, I'll find out whether our historian can provide additional details. The sun on the upper left-hand side is well known as a distinguishing weather feature of Southern California, if not the entire state. The final element are the mountains and ocean which comprise part of the scenery we enjoy, living in the Los Angeles basin. There are also the words "Heart of the South Bay", referring to the southern part of the Santa Monica Bay.
