Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (website) was established in Burdur by Law No. 5,467, published on 17 March 2008 in the Turkish official gazette, No. 26,111, merging bodies formerly part of Süleyman Demirel University and Akdeniz University.
The university is composed of 3 Faculties, 2 Schools, 6 Vocational Schools and 3 Institutes.

The university is named for Mehmet Akif Ersoy (1873-1936), who earned national fame as the author of the verses of the Turkish national anthem, İstiklâl Marşı (Independence March).

The flag of the university (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the university's emblem.
The emblem was inspired by the migrating flamingos that embellish Burdur every year. Those endangered birds convey a message of nature and environmental awareness. The red color supplies energy and represents happiness; red also has an exhilarating and exciting effect on human psychology. The blue color represents Lake Burdur. It also symbolizes creativity, solemnity, authenticity and idealism. The emphasized theme of the emblem is the dynamic, creative structure of Mehmet Akif Ersoy University that holds science and technology together.
