The Mehmetçik Foundation (website) was established on 17 May 1982 to provide social and economical support to veterans and handicapped members of the Turkish Armed Forces, and to the relatives of soldiers killed in action.
Mehmetçik (Little Mehmet) is the generic nickname given to the Turkish soldiers. The eponymous Mehmetçik is generally believed to be Bigalı Mehmet Çavuş (Sergeant Mehmet of Biga; 1878-1964; biography), who heroically defended the Seddülbahir Fort on 4 March 1915 during the Gallipoli Campaign.
