Flag of Rogatec, horizontal and vertical versions - Images by Željko Heimer, 10 March 2000
The municipality of Rogatec seceded from Šmarje pri Jelšah in 1995.
Željko Heimer, 27 January 2002
The flag and coat of arms of Rogatec are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu, zastavi in prazniku Občine Rogatec, adopted on 11 July 1996 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, nr. 43, 2 August 1996, pp. 3766-8.
The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.
The flag is rectangular, in proportions 2:5, vertically divided
white-red-white. In the red field there is the attribute from the
coat of arms - the roundel with the conical roof.
The attribute is prescribed not to be lower then 2/3 of the hoist and
not to be higher then 8/10.
The Decision prescribes that the "details of the flag field ratios and the code of the flag colours are integral part of this Decision", but these are not included in the official gazette text.

Article 6 of the aforementioned Decision says:
... The shield is on sides bordered golden. In red field on golden base there is a silver two-floor roundel, with open passage through its first floor with rised portcullis of three vertical bars. The middle of the wall above the entrance contains a right-angled slanted line, both right and left above it there is an embrasure. The second floor is topped with massoned consoled bead-moulding with four palisades, behind which a conical red roof is rising, topped with a golden ball. Both left and right of the roundel first floor there is a station-house like a circular pole, with an embrasure under a red conical roof. ...
The coat of arms can be blazoned as "Gules on a base vert a gate with a tower embattled argent roofed gules with two sentry towers argent roofed gules and a raised
Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] quote the booklet Simboli občine Rogatec by B. Otorepec and V. Jurečič (1996). King Ferdinand I issued an "armorial letter" (that is, granted arms) with a detailed blazon and a colour drawing of the arms for the market town Rogated on 6 February 1535. The drawing from this document is the source for the current coat of arms to the most minor details, differing from the current in the shield shape and the green base. The second source of the coat of arms of Rogatec is the book published in 1882 by Carl Schmutz, Historisch Topographisches Lexicon, where there is a black and white drawing of the coat of arms of "Regatsche", somewhat different in the details and including two mullets. The later mentioned coat of arms differ from the 1535 original.
