image by Vanja Poposki, 23 May 2020A rectangular cloth of blue color with a ratio of width to length 2: 3, in the center of which there are figures from the coat of arms of the city: a bow placed in the left lanyard, an ax with a stone tip down and a spear with a stone tip up, with the tip of the ax laid on top of the rest of the figures; all figures are yellow. The flip side of the flag is a mirror image of its front side.
The flag is based on the emblem of the city and repeats its symbolism. Adopted 28.01.2020. Previously, there were three versions of the city flag, probably all unofficial, which were used on various events.

Description and meaning: In an azure field, an ax with a stone tip down, placed between the bow and spear with the stone tip up, with the tip of the ax placed on top of the bow and spear; all three figures are golden, placed in the left band and accompanied by two special silver signs: in the upper right corner - a sign in the form of an overturned fork-shaped cross, the lower ends of which also extend above the crosshairs and are gamma-lined to the sides, and in the lower left corner - a sign in the form a concave pyramid, from which it rises to the sides in an arc bent inward and completed with a bezant. The composition of the coat of arms symbolizes the historical and other features of the city of Gorno-Altaysk. In the upper white field on the left is a geometric ornament that originates from ancient times and is the most common element of Russian (Slavic) ornament. In the lower blue field on the right, another ornament is placed - it is most common among Altai (Turkic-speaking peoples) and has a similar interpretation. In the center of the shield diagonally depicts the oldest tools: a stone ax with a wooden handle, a spear with a stone tip and a bow with a bowstring. These are attributes of labor and hunting. This composition reflects the idea of the uniqueness of the city. In the city of Gorno-Altaisk, there is one of the oldest archaeological sites in the territory of the former USSR - the Ulalin site of ancient people. Estimated age is several hundred thousand years. The tools are represented by quartzite choppers (large stone tools, the working edge is upholstered on only one side), scrapers, and tips. Thanks to the Ulalin parking, the city of Gorno-Altaysk is a city with traces of the activities of the first people on the planet, which distinguishes the city from all the cities of Russia. The colors used in the coat of arms in heraldry denote: - Yellow color (gold) symbolizes wealth, justice, stability, respect, generosity. - White color (silver) - a symbol of perfection, nobility and faith. - Blue, blue (azure) symbolizes exalted aspirations, sincerity and virtue; it is also the color of water bodies (rivers) and clear skies. The shield field is white and blue, repeating the flag of the Altai Republic, which indicates the status of the city as the capital of the republic. In the upper white box on the left is a geometric ornament of dark red color. It originates from ancient times and is the most common element of Russian (Slavic) ornament. In the lower blue field on the right is an ornament of white color. It is most common among Altai (Turkic-speaking peoples) and has a similar interpretation. The central part of the heraldic composition reflects the idea of the uniqueness of our city. In the city Gorno-Altaisk is one of the oldest monuments in the territory of the former USSR.
