It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of white and blue.

Coat of arms

Shield Argent, issuant from base a doublemount, a volcano, charged with a bar wavy parted Azure and Gules and fimbriated Argent, supplied from both peaks by a bend Azure fimbriated Argent and a bend sinister Gules fimbriated Argent, in chief a goshawk volant proper, holding an inescutcheon Azure, charged with five plates in quincunx (quina) . Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "FURNAS - POVOAÇÃO".
Meaning:
The goshawk is a local symbol of the Açores. The double mount is referring to volcanoes and hot springs alongside the caldera of St. Michael.

Furnas Commune is one of the six communes of Povoação Municipality; it had 1445 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 34.4 km².
