It is a fairily typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a background quartered of white and blue.

Shield Gules between two oxen heads Or armed Argent on chief and a fess wavy Azure fimbriated potenty Argent a castle Argent masoned Azure with port and windows of the same with balcony turrets on its main tower. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE MONTALEGRE" (see left flag image above) or simply "MONTALEGRE" (see right flag image above).
Meaning:
The arms include a reference to the local meat oxen variety barrosã and to the local castle; Montalegre is located on the border line with Spain, locally formed by a small river.

Presentation of Montalegre

Montalegre municipality had 1273 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 35 communes covering 806,19 km². It is part of Vila Real District, traditional province and 1999 ref. adm. region Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Alto Trás-os-Montes.
