About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain green field.

Coat of arms

Shield Argent, a parasol of alternating panels of Or and Gules on a pole sable topped by a cross, inn base a palm leaf fessy Vert. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "MECA - ALENQUER"
The palm is a symbol of martyrdom and here referring to Quitéria, a virgin and later local patron saint, whose image wondrously appeared in the crown of a local pine tree in 1238. Later on in this place a chapel for pilgrimage was erected. The parasol is referring to two others in Lisboa dedicated to Joanina of Lisboa, the eastern located in the cathedral and the western located in Paço chapel.
