Historical roots (from the communal website [in Hebrew]):
The biblical reference to the area is Gibeon, a city of priests in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin (Joshua 21:17). Another reference is Joshua's famous cry during his battle against the Gibeonites: "Sun, stand still over Gibeon; moon, over the Valley of Aijalon". At the time of the Return to Zion, the inhabitants of Gibeon were also among those who returned to the land and took part in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 3:7). Later, the descendants of Benjamin settled in Gibeon; the roots of Saul, the first King of Israel, lay there. Tel Gibeon is situated in the centre of the village of Al-Jib, near Givat Ze'ev.
In 1977, a group of pioneers from the Gibeon settlement group arrived at an abandoned Jordanian military camp near ancient Gibeon. The founders of the group were veteran settlers and new immigrants from the Soviet Union, who set themselves the goal of realising the Jewish people's ownership of the Land of Israel, expanding and securing the borders of Jerusalem, and establishing a communal settlement in the area.
