Presentation of Ozalj

The Town of Ozalj (7,932 inhabitants in 2001, 1,164 in the village of Ozalj) is situated about 10 km north-west of Karlovac.
The fort of Ozalj has been known since at least the 12th century; in the Middle Ages, it was a significant fortification owned by important families, such as Babonić, Frankopan and Zrinski. Ozalj was the unofficial capital of Croatia as Ban Petar Zrinski was having his seat there. This is also the peak of Ozalj's history, as Petar Zrinski and Frank Krsto Frankopan tried to get liberty for Croatia from the Vienna absolutism and were soon killed in Wiener Neustadt in 1671. A hydroelectric plant was built in Ozalj in 1908, on the last waterfall on river Kupa. From 1992 until 1997 Ozalj had the status of Municipality.

The symbols of Ozalj are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Ozlja, adopted on 30 July 2002 by the Town Assembly and published in the Town official gazette Službeni glasnik Grada Ozlja, no. 5.
The Decision was amended by Decision Odluka o izmjenama i dopunama Statuta Grada Ozlja, adopted on 5 October 2005.
The current Town Status Statut Grada Ozlja, adopted on 14 July 2009 and published the same day in Službeni glasnik Grada Ozlja, no. 5, includes the description of the coat of arms and the flag, as introduced in the 2001 Statutes amended in 2005, and thus included in the consolidated text Statut Grada Ozlja (pročišćeni tekst), adopted on 13 February 2006 and published on 16 February 2006 in Službeni glasnik Grada Ozlja, No. 1.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, yellow with the coat of arms in the middle.
