Description

The flag of Oviedo University is flown beside the Spanish and Asturian ones from several university buildings. Adoption date unknown.

Luis Miguel Arias, 18 Jan 2002

The coat-of-arms of the University of Oviedo is (...) that of the Valdés family (...): Argent three bars Azure between ten crosses of St George of England [sic]. Crest: archbishop's hat, cross, cords and tassels.

This (official) description is mistaken, since the "crosses of St George of England" are actually red roses, alternatively blazoned as red discs bearing a white cross each (ten torteaux each charged with a cross Argent, as on the above image). Also, the Valdés arms show 12 roses/roundels not 10.

From the University website:

[The University] was founded in 1579, obtained approval from Pope Gregory XIII and King Phillip III in 1604, started its activities on 21 September 1608 teaching Theology, Canons, Laws and Arts, and its first chancellor was Alonso Marañón de Espinosa.
Panizo 1994 says:

The University of Oviedo uses (...) the arms of its founder, Fernando Valdés de Salas [1483-1568, Archbishop and Inquisitor General]: Argent three bars Azure between ten torteaux each charged with a cross Or, placed 3,2,2,3. Crest: archbishop's hat, cross and tassels.
