Municipality of Ohanes got its official symbols on 26.01.2023. Sources: simbolos de Almería, Junta de Andalucia
The shield is oblong in shape, following the classical Spanish tradition, with a ratio of six to four in height. Its design is on a semi-rolled parchment, organized into four concentric circles, each containing a symbol representing the tradition and history of Ohanes. It thus corresponds to the model of municipal heraldry with archaeological roots, alluding to the town's historical past.
These symbols are:
Crowning these four fields is a compass rose in gules (Pantone: PMS 7417/CMYK: 6 78 83 0), and on both sides wings in black, and above all the text “Villa de Ohanes”.
Ring.
The shield lacks the usual crest of the Royal Crown of Spain because it is composed within a semi-rolled parchment, whose heading is the identification Villa de Ohanes.
Shield shape.
It will be drawn according to the composition of a parchment slightly rolled at its top and base, leaving a wide central body free to arrange the four fields or quarters with four symbolic elements of the history and tradition of Ohanes, headed by a compass rose and some waves, and as a crowning element the legend “Villa de Ohanes”.»
Meaning:
The first quarter represents the Islamic past. The second, its former belonging to the Kingdom of Granada, the third, the old silk industry, and the fourth, the cultivation of the vine.
Rectangular flag with a size ratio of 25 units long by 15 units wide, with two backgrounds of green vert and purple, alternating in two fields or quarters separated by an oblique silver band, highlighted from the background with a white ribbon, showing centered and superimposed the official coat of arms of the municipality of Ohanes in the form of semi-rolled scrolls, in a proportion of 20% of the total length of the flag.
The purple violet color alludes to the eight-pointed star and its connection to the Hispano-Muslim past (Pantone: PMS 2084 CP/CMYK: 64 86 0 0). Specifically, it is characteristic of Hispano-Muslim tilework, the intricate patterns of plasterwork, and the composition of Mudéjar roof structures. It is a clear reference to the Hispano-Muslim past, the integration into the district of Luchar, and the historical memory associated with the tragic events of the Morisco rebellion of the Bloody Christmas of 1568 and the subsequent repression with the capture of Ohanes by the Marquis of Vélez on February 1, 1569.
The color blood red is used for a half-open pomegranate, a clear reference to Granada's connection to the Nasrid kingdom and to the fruit's characteristic association with the Mediterranean world, and especially the Alpujarra region. It constitutes, in effect, a new and twofold identification with the Hispano-Muslim past. (Pantone: PMS 1805/CMYK: 22 94 93 15).
The green color vert (Patone: PMS 2421 XGC/CMYK: 70 0 98 0), identified with a mulberry leaf or shoot, with a white silkworm in the center, alludes to the historical link of Ohanes with the silk industry that flourished in the Alpujarra of Almería during much of the Modern Age, with antecedent in the Hispano-Muslim past, now currently disappeared, although some municipalities in the area have planted mulberry trees in public parks instead of other trees, as an unequivocal historical reminder.
The color is very light gold (Pantone: PMS 2006 XGS/CMYK: 9 22 72 0). It depicts a bunch of grapes with vine leaves in green enamel, commemorating the economic development from the 19th to the mid-20th century thanks to the cultivation of Ohanes grapes, or Almería table grapes, which replaced the old, traditional dryland landscape with its lush terraced hillsides covered in vineyards. Local landowners built magnificent bourgeois homes, such as the Widow's House, and the population of Ohanes reached 3,000 inhabitants by the end of the 19th century.
The red color gules (Pantone: PMS 7417/CMYK: 6 78 83 0) identifies a compass rose, centered with black wings on either side.
