Berching Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess, above Azure, beneath Argent a bishop issuant from base dressed Gules with mitre of the same and crozier Or.
Meaning:
According to a fragment of the oldest city seal from 1320 it is supposed that there had been just two croziers in saltire, supported by a painting with two silver croziers on a red background. The 2nd seal and later examples and paintings displayed a bishop in half length portrait beneath and the crossed croziers above. The tinctures were different. Both symbols were referring to the Bishopric of Eichstätt, to which the city belonged since the 10th century until 1803. The current pattern was introduced in 1819. The croziers were replaced by that one in the hand of the bishop and the tinctures had become those of Bayern, white and blue.
