Shield parted per fess; above Or a lion issuant Sable, armed, tongued and eyed Gules; beneath Azure two roses Gules seeded Or with stems Vert in saltire issuant from a triplemount Argent.
Meaning:
Schalkau was ruled by the Counts of Schaumberg and had been a fiefdom of the Counts of Henneberg since 1315. It was first mentioned as a city in 1232. But market and city rights were officially granted much later in 1362 by the Margraves of Meißen. Since 1317 the settlement had been a condominiom of the Margraves of Meißen and the Counts of Schaumberg. The owners of the Saxonian part changed frequently between various Saxonian duchies. Finally this part was acquired by Sachsen-Meiningen, which also acquired the other part in 1729.The oldest seal dates from the same time and showed already the same arms as above. The upper half shows the lion of the Margraves of Meißen, the tinctures of the lower two half changed a few times. The current tinctures are thoses of the Counts of Schaumburg. The meaning of the flowers is not known.
