Großenhain Coat of Arms

Shield Or a lion rampant Sable armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
The city was founded by the Margraves of Meißen around 1200. It had been the next door neighbour of a Slavic settlement called Ozzec. The city was called Hayn in 1224 and Marcgrevinhain in 1255, which means "grove of the margraves". It had been called a town since 1212 and a city since 1254. The existence of mayor and city council is proven since 1293. In 1300 the city walls had been completed. The city had been seat of two monasteries and a convent. After the Protestant Reformation was introduced in 1539, monasteries and the local castle decayed. In 1744 the city was nearly completely burnt down. The arms are based on a city seal from 1292 and display the lion of the margraviate. Seals from the 14th century displayed the helmet of the margraves crested by a fan of peacock feathers and fixed by some kind of ladder. The shield displayed as symbol of the city two lions addorsed. In the 15th century the ladder was misinterpreted and replaced by a tree supported by two lions. In 1889 the first pattern was restored. Since the beginning of the 20th century seals and stamps as well displayed the arms again with the crested helm but with a shield in bend displaying only one lion. Both versions were used side by side.
