Mansfeld Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, a sinister facing knight in armour Or, mounted on a horse Argent bridled Or, killing a dragon Vert in base by his lance Or.
Meaning:
The city was acquired by the Archbishopric of Magdeburg in 973. In the 11th century a castle had been built. It became seat of the Counts of Mansfeld in 1229. It was a fiefdom of the Bishopric of Halberstadt until 1277. The castle was divided into two units (German: Örter) in 1420 and into three units in 1501. Between 1517 and 1560 it was reinforced by common walls and with Renaissance buildings. It became one of the strongest fortresses in central Germany. The Counts of Mansfeld died out in 1780 and Mansfeld became a possession of Prussia. The knight is St. George, patron saint of the local parish church, which was built in the 13th century and reconstructed in 1497, and the whole county. On the oldest city seal from 1508 of Tal-Mansfeld, i.e. Mansfeld Valley, full name "Unten in dem Tale zu Mansfeld"", i.e. beneath in the valley of Mansfeld, the knight was already sinister facing, he became dexter facing since 1717, and again sinister facing since 2006.
