Schleusingen Coat of Arms

Shield Azure three towers Argent with windows Sable and bulbous spires Gules topped by weather vanes Or, in the open gate a hen statant Sable armed Gules on top of a triplemount Vert.
Meaning:
Schleusingen was first mentioned as a village in 1232, as a city in 1268. In 1291 a commandery of the Order of Saint John was established, in 1502 a Franciscan Monastery. Mayor and council are reported since the end of the 15th century. They held the low level cognisance and since 1714 also the high level cognisance. The Unterstadt (= the lower town) outside the city walls had been an independent municipality between 1460 and 1831. The local castle had been seat of administration and seat of the Counts of Henneberg from the 2nd half of the 13th century until 1583, when the kin died out. Afterwards the city had been a condominion of both branches of the Wettin kin and became a part of the Electorate of Sachsen in 1660. The arms are based on a city seal from 1430, which had been granted by Mechthild, consort of Count Heinrich XI of Henneberg. The first version displayed the arms of Baden, the kin of Mechthild.

Rappelsdorf Coat of Arms

Shield Sable a mermaid couchant Argent holding a mirror of the same by her dexter hand; mantle Or, at dexter charged with a sinister facing hen Sable combed Gules, at sinister charged with a millwheel Sable.
Meaning:
The hen is the heraldic animal of the Counts of Henneberg, who ruled the village for centuries. The sinister facing hen is a differentiation of the family arms of the counts. The watermill wheel is a symbol for the importance of the local watermill, which is now a monument under protection. The mermaid is chosen due to a local legend. There are several stories about a nymph in a Pond of Death (German: Totenlache) in the local legends. Hence she was chosen as a symbol of the village.

Meaning:
The fir is a canting element, the name can be translated as meadow near the forest (German: Wald). Until 1583 the village was a possession of the Counts of Henneberg, which is symbolised by the canting family arms, consisting of a hen (German:Henne) on a mount (German: Berg).
