Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Azure a lion rampant Or, armed and tongued Gules, at sinister Or a stag rampant Gules.
Meaning:
Herzberg had been a market town since the 16th century and gained city rights in 1929. The lion is that one of the Welfen kin, as Herzberg belonged to that family since 1157, when Heinrich the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria acquired the local castle. Herzberg later on belonged to the Duchy of Grubenhagen. The stag had been the symbol of Herzberg Subcounty (Amt) within former Osterode at Harz County. The colours red and yellow had been those of the Counts of Lutterberg, which erected a fortress Hirschberg, also former name of the city, in 1029.
