Wellheim Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, on base Vert a horse salient Gules armed Or.
Meaning:
Prints of the first local seal are known since 1497. It was used by mayor and council and displayed a horse issuant with a very big head. The same pattern prevailed until 1812, when the horse had been black. The current pattern including the tinctures was introduced by Otto Hupp in 1898. Red and white are the tinctures of the Bishopric of Eichstätt, to which Wellheim belonged until 1803, also those of the Counts of Helfenstein, who ruled the town between 1458 and 1627. The meaning of the horse is unknown. There are mere speculations that it is derived from the elephant on the arms of the counts.
