The municipality

The municipality of Shawville (1,587 inhabitants in 2016; 540 ha) is located 40 km north-west of Pontiac. Shawville is totally enclaved within the municipality of the county of Clarendon

Shawville was first settled in summer 1821 by Thomas Hodgins, John Dale and his wife Elizabeth; they were Irish protestants from the county of Tipperary, who had emigrated to the county of Carleton (Upper-Canada) in 1815, in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. They were soon joined by several other families from Carleton.
Originally known as Clarendon, the village was incorporated as the municipality of the village of Shawville on 12 January 1873, named for the influential Shaw family. On 2 August 2003, it became the municipality of Shawville.

The green and gold coat of arms is an adaptation of the original, seven-colored design proposed by Mrs Orla Mee (1916-1999) during a contest held in 1973. Deemed to expensive to produce, the design was simplified, keeping only two colors.

Green represents the colonists, who were mostly Irish, as well as the rural area surrounding Shawville.
Orange represents Protestant faith. Among Quebec's village, Shawville is unique by having a majority of Protestant inhabitants.
The big "V" stands for victory and hundred years of growth. The cross inside the "V" represents the inhabitants' Christian faith, as exemplified by churches and "This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." (1 John 5:4b). The two crowns surrounding the cross recall the venerated memory of the fighters and inhabitants fallen during the two World Wars.
Since the arms of Quebec are charged with three maple leaves and the Canadian flag with a single one, the three maple leaves on the arms of Shawville means status in Quebec and Quebec in Canada.
The tree symbolizes forests, mostly cleared for the sake of agriculture.
The garb represents the wheat fields and the rich arable lands.
The axe and the scythe are emblems of the pioneers' period.
