Municipality

The Town of Brownsburg-Chatham (7,261 inhabitants in 2018; 24,838 ha) is located 90 km north-west of Montreal.

Brownsburg and Chatham formed the single municipality of the Chatham Canton from 1855 to 1935. Following a dispute between the two components about street lightning and tax regime, the urban part separated to form the Village of Brownsburg. The separation did not prevent the two municipalities to maintain common services, such as a joint fire brigade and a cross-country skiing center.
On 5 August 1971, the newspaper "Le Droit" wrote: "The merger of Brownsburg-Chatham would boost local economy". While the article claims that the merger was approved by the officials and most inhabitants of the two components, nothing happened. The municipality of Brownsburg-Chatham was eventually established by Decree No. 1,112 issued on 6 October 1999, and elevated a Town by Decree No. 8,385 issued on 6 July 2002.

Brownsburg-Chatham, one of Quebec's largest municipalities by its area, is composed of a big territory with scattered fields and villages, limited by Ottawa River and the Laurentian Mountains. Accordingly, it could be only represented by a bird.
The nesting bird, the bird taking off and flies without any obstacle over the beautiful, vast region. Both gracious and courageous, the bird proudly looks towards future and promises. The whirls of the rivers and the furrows of the land, which, plowed by man with the love of mother nature, feed those it protects, are engraved on its wing. The feathers, colored like the rivers and the sky, harmoniously combine the green colors of the meadows and forests. Its Celtic touch conveys to the logotype a look of pride and honor, which is characteristic of the region's people.
The logotype can be interpreted in many different ways, which makes it attractive.
