The municipality of Arroio Trinta (3,500 inhabitants in 2010; 9,433 ha) is 
located 420 km west of Florianópolis.
Arroio Trinta was settled in 1923 
by Italian colonists coming from the south of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do 
Sul. An estimate of 95% of the population is of Italian origin; in 1994, Arroio 
Trinta was the first municipality out of Italy to adopt Italian as a teaching 
language.
