Municipality

The municipality of Barra do Guarita (3,245 inhabitants in 2016: 6,459 ha) is located on the extreme north of Rio Grande do Sul, 400 km of Porto Alegre, on the confluence ("barra") of rivers Guarita and Uruguai, the latter separating it from the town of Itapiranga (Santa Catarina), and close to the border with Misiones Province (Argentina).
The district of Barra do Guarita was established within the municipality of Tenente Portela by Municipal Law No. 320 promulgated on 31 October 1963.. The municipality of Barra do Guarita was established by State Law No. 9,572 promulgated on 20 March 1992, and inaugurated on 1 January 1993.
