As announced in the Cleveland Banner, the city of Cleveland, Tennessee, has adopted a flag:

The Cleveland City Council recently approved a design for the flag from committee suggestions. Committee members Cameron Fisher and Melissa Woody presented three possible designs. The Council ultimately approved a design from a compilation of two of the ideas.

The flag will feature a modified state seal on a dark blue field. Fisher described the blue as "a deep midnight blue." Instead of reading "The State of the City," the banner above the main image of the seal will read "The City With Spirit."

"Our conversation was that it would be more seal-inspired … rather than being the official seal," Woody said.

Presented designs included the city seal on a blue background, the city seal on a blue background with a gold stripe on the side and the city seal modified to say "The City With Spirit" on a blue background with a gold stripe.

Woody described the flag design as "classic," with an easily understood symbol important to the city.

"The seal is such a longstanding symbol for our city," Woody said.

Vice Mayor George Poe served as chairman of the committee. City planner Corey Divel served as an ex-officio member.

"The first thing we did was some research on flags of other cities," Fisher said.

He said the committee was in agreement that it wanted a simple design.

"Our city seal tells the story. It's most of our history here," Fisher said.

The seal features the Cherokee Chieftain sculpture as well as symbols of education and commerce.

Fisher said he did not know when the seal had been adopted, but it would have to be sometime after 1974 because that is when the Chieftain carving featured in the seal was created.
