On 21 April 2017, the coat of arms of Gómez Palacio was unveiled. The design was created by María del Refugio González. In December 2016, the Municipal Institute of Art and
Culture opened a call for submissions; in total, it received 18 entries. Members of the jury were as follows: Manuel Ramírez López, María del Pilar Torres, Francisco Javier Tula
Martínez, Norma Córdova Briones, and Daniel Martínez. The call closed on 31 January, one submission being accepted per author at their offices from 9 am to 3 pm. The winner
received a quantity of Troy ounces of silver, but the main prize was that the winner's design would be the municipal coat of arms.
The shield has a belt going around its sides. At the bottom, it reads "CUNA DE LA REVOLUCIÓN" [Cradle of the Revolution], and has at the top of the belt (upper-right and upper-left)
clusters of grapes for the productive activities of the past. At the top is mantling, with a bud of cotton in its center signifying the same as the grapes. The background to the inner shield is a
scene with the Cerro de las Calabazas and land that can be seen from the city. Above the inner shield is the year 1905, when Gómez Palacio became recognized as a city by the State Congress.
The background of the inner shield is in the National Colors. The upper-left section depicts Francisco Villa on horseback, as the Revolutionary fought in this city. The upper-right section depicts
the ahuehuete tree in the central plaza of Gómez Palacio, a tree that is more than 100 years old. The lower-left section depicts the monument to the train at the old train station,
remembering its railroading history. The lower-right section depicts the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A small triangle is seen at the bottom that depicts a cow head, also for the activities
of the past. The center of the shield depicts the iconic star that is seen on the Cerro de las Calabazas.
