Description of the Flag

From an article located by Wim Schuurman on 12 January, 2019, the current flag was adopted 8 June 2018. The golden hamsa that was featured on the previous flag was redesigned and placed on a red background, a design that was supported by the local population and supported by Mon State Chief Minister Dr. Aye Zan. The size of the hamsa is undetermined, yet the ratio of the flag is 2:3.

A "Hamsa" usually is a swan, e.g. the messenger between the lovers "Nala and Damayanti" in the namesake poem.

2018 Proposals

From the Mon State Parliament Facebook page, dated 7 June 2018, posted four draft designs for the state flag. Including the golden hamsa on red that was eventually chosen, a golden hamsa on a blue background was considered. The other drafts were of the same patterns with the addition of the state name, in white, placed below the hamsa (similar to the flag being used until this point).
Zachary Harden, 17 January 2019

"The Mon State approved a flag depicting a golden hamsa on red background without any text as the Mon State flag on June 8. During the parliamentary session in the Mon State Hluttaw, the MPs discussed the issue based on the votes the public has made in the media. The Mon State Chief Minister asked the parliament to approve the flag depicting a golden hamsa with red color background as the Mon State flag since it has been supported by the public. He said he will take responsibility for all the pros and cons caused by the flag. The approved flag is six feet long and four feet wide. The background color is red and a golden male hamsa is located in the center."
