Semigallia (Latvian: /Zemgale/) is located between the Daugava river in the north, Lithuanian border in the south and the land of Courland (/Kurzeme/) in the west; as such, it had also comprised the region of Selonia which is now recognized as a distinct historical land. Its largest city, Jelgava, had been the capital of the Duchy of Courland whose full name was actually Duchy of Courland and Semigallia.
