Flag

Located in Yokohama City Kanagawa Prefecture and established in 1949. The embroidered ceremonial flag has sky blue background with a gold emblem at the canton and horizontal writing gold kanji university name on navy blue horizontal band at the bottom and gold fringe. The emblem consists of the Chinese characters "大學" in the center and traditional "design of seigaiha" =calm waves on the ground, with the surrounding square shaped like a "sumikiri" (a square cutout). The design for a badge to be attached to the lapel of student uniforms was solicited within the university in 1949, and a staff member's proposal was adopted as the mark. The "seigaiha" is a lucky omen. The semicircles representing the undulations of the waves overlap to form a fan shape, which represents the calm sea that continues forever. It has long been used as a pattern on clothing and vessels in the hope that days will go on forever in peace and tranquility like the calm sea, and that eventually, like the fan that spreads out in the end, good fortune will come to us. The emblem of Yokohama National University is based on this traditional design.
