According to Gifu University, the symbol was created by one of their professors, Hanichi Sakai, in 1950. It was formally adopted in 1951 and was later incorporated into the university logomark in 2009. The logomark manual, while it does not have a flag specification sheet, denotes the orange is DIC 163 and black is a process color.

On May 31, 1949, Gifu Normal School and Gifu Normal School for Young Men became the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Gifu Agriculture and Forestry College became the Faculty of Agriculture, giving birth to the new Gifu University system. The emblem was designed by Professor Norikazu Sakai of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In 2006, the university emblem regulations were established, and "black" and "orange" were defined as the drawing method and university colors. The emblem means a cormorant boat and a bonfire. The bonfire signifies learning and the boat signifies the happiness of mankind. The combination of two bodies, yin and yang, signifies heaven, earth and nature. It signifies total being and activity, harmony and balance. The combination of black and orange signifies will and passion. It also signifies richness of sensibility and dignity. The simplified form signifies the cleanliness and activity of the modern age. It also signifies the speed and intelligence of the times.
