Overview

Organismo Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria (OIRSA - International Regional Organism for Plant and Animal Health) is an international organization aiming at protecting the Central American region against socio-economical impacts of pests and diseases on plant and livestock production.
OIRSA groups Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama (founding members, 1953), Belize (1996) and Dominican Republic (2003).
OIRSA was established in October 1953 during the 5th Conference of Ministers of Agriculture and Cattle Breeding of Mexico, Central American and Panama, held in San Salvador. OIRSA succeeded Comité Internacional de Coordinacion para el Combate de la Lanogsta (CICLA - International Committee for the Control of Locusts), which had been established in 1947 in the aftermath of the devastation caused by the Central American locust, Schistocerca piceifrons (Walker, 1870). Established in Managua in 1965, the permanent seat of the organization was transferred to San Salvador in 1961.
In January 2007, OIRSA certified the eradication of the cottonpink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders, 1843) from Corn Islands (Nicaragua), completing eradication from Central America after a 10-year program.
In 2011, OIRSA certified the eradication of classic swine fever from Honduras, completing eradication from Central America.
