Presentation of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni

The municipality of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni (45,576 inhabitants in 2018, therefore Guyane's 2nd most populated municipality; 483,000 ha) is located 250 km west of Cayenne, upstram the estuary of river Maroni.

Saint-Laurent was founded in 1858 by Auguste Baudin as the arrival point for convicts, Camp de la Transportation, near an Amerindian settlement called Kamalakuli for the local cacique. On 15 September 1880, the town became the capital of a special penal municipality, whose mayor was the Director of the Penitentiary Administration.
elected Representative in 1932, Gaston Monnerville campaigned for the suppression of the penal colony. Thi was obtained on 17 June 1938, but the final closure did not come until 1946. On 9 November 1949, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni was granted the status of "ordinary" municipality.
