Presentation of Naviera Elcano

Elcano was established in 1943 by the National Institute of Industry as Empresa Nacional Elcano de la Marina Mercante S.A.(Merchant Navy National Company). The company's namesake is Juan Sebastián Elcano (1476-1526), who completed in 1522 the first documented circumnavigation, when he brought back to Spain the Victoria, the last remaining ship of Magellan's expedition.
Originally both a shipping and shipbuilding company, Elcano dropped its shipyards in 1964. Privatized in 1997, the company was renamed to Naviera Elcano.
Elcano is today an international group of shipping companies (Empresa Naviera Elcano S.A., Empresa de Navegação Elcano S.A., Empresa Naviera Petrolera Atlántica, S.A. - ENPASA, Elcano Gas Transport S.A.U.) with branches in Portugal, Brazil and Argentina, and other countries as well. The company manages its own fleet, rejuvenated after the company's privatization, composed of 21 ships (6 bulk carriers, 4 tankers, 4 chemical carriers, 3 LPG carriers, and 4 LNG carriers).
