Symbols of Arafo

The flag of Arafo, in unofficial use at the Town Hall, is dark red with the municipal coat of arms in the middle.

The coat of arms of Arafo is prescribed by Decree No. 599, adopted on 13 March 1975 by the Spanish Government and published on 27 March 1975 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 74, p. 6,391 (text).
The coat of arms, validated by the Royal Academy of History, is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Or a closed book azure ensigned with a crozier [or] per bend and a heart gules pierced [per bend] by an arrow, 2. Gules a bend argent. A bordure vert charged in chief with the writing "añavingo" in letters argent and with three bunches of grapes or 2 and 1. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown open.

According to José Manuel Erbez (Banderas y escudos de Canarias, 2007; website), the first quarter features the coat of arms of the Order of St. Augstine, owner of an important convent in Arafo. The second quarter features the arms of the Nuñez family, founder of the town. The grapes represent wine-growing, while Añavingo is the name of the gorge providing water to the population. The lyre [not prescribed, neither are the laurel branches, in the original Decree] refers to the local musical tradition.

The flag of Arafo, in unofficial use at the Town Hall a few years ago, is purple with the municipal coat of arms in the middle. The coat of arms lacks the lyre and the laurel branches beneath the shield, therefore matching the official prescription.
