Presentation of Cabañas Raras

The municipality of Cabañas Raras (1,329 inhabitants in 2010; 1,911 ha; municipal website) is located in the northwest of León Province, 110 km of León. The municipality is made of the villages of Cabañas Raras (capital) and Cortiguera.

Cabañas was, according to the local tradition, settled by shepherds coming from the Alpujarra mountains (Granada Province, Andalusia) who built huts (cabañas); several adobe huts have indeed been preserved until now. There is no historical record of such a migration; however, it is possible that descendants from Leonese or Galician colonists who had resettled the Alpujarra after the expelling of the Moors subsequently moved back to the north of Spain. Cabañas Raras has set up with the town of Lanjarón (Andalusia) a partnership recalling a possible common origin.

Symbols of Cabañas Raras

The flag and arms of Cabañas Raras are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 23 June 1998 by the León Provincial Government, signed on the same day by the President of the Government, and published on 29 July 1998 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 143 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, with proportions 2:3, made of two equal vertical stripes, at hoist blue, at fly white, with a counter colored rectangle of 1/3 of the flag's hoist and 2/3 of the flag's length.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Azure a straw hut argent, 2. Argent a holly oak eradicated vert. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

Quintana del Marco has a similar flag, with blue instead of red.

The Royal Academy of History found "no drawback to accept the proposed, canting arms". The proposed flag was "accepted without any problem" (Boletín de la Real Academia de Historia 196, 2: 355-356, 1999).
