Flag of the Balearic Islands

The flag of the Balearic Islands is prescribed in Article 4 of the Autonomy Statutes, which form the Constitutional Law No. 2, promulgated by King John Charles on 25 February 1983 and published on 1 March 1983 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 51, pp. 5,776-5,783 (text), as follows.

1. The flag of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands shall be made of four red vertical stripes on a yellow background, with a quarter placed in the upper left part, purple with a white, five-towered castle.
2. Each island can have its proper flag and symbols, to be prescribed by the respective Insular Council.

The reformed Statutes of the Balearic Islands, which form the Constitutional Law No. 1, promulgated by King John Charles on 28 February 2007 and published on 1 March 2007 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 52, pp. 8,703-8,728 (text), keep the same prescription in Article 6, adding the 1st of March as the Day of the Balearic Islands.

The flag is derived from the flag of Majorca, which was modeled on King Sancho's alleged banner.

Erroneous representations of the flag

The flag of Majorca was observed in August 2000 with the canton occupying only the first four pallets, thus measuring 4/9thsof the hoist. This is probably an incorrect variant.

Pedersen [ped79a] shows another flag for the Balearic islands. The pattern is the same like that one of the Valencian Community, yellow with four red horizontal stripes and a vertical blue stripe at the hoist.

Province of Palma de Mallorca

The Province of Palma de Mallorca still exists. The former Diputación Provincial (Provincial Council), however, was suppressed in the Autonomous Communities that comprise only one province. Therefore, the only administrative body is now the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands. No flag was ever adopted or used by the Province of Palma de Mallorca.

Beside the usual green, yellow and red flags indicating sea bathing conditions, the Balearic Islands use a plain orange flag to indicate that life guard is not on duty.
