Presentation of Acehúche

The municipality of Acehúche (801 inhabitants in 2019 vs. 2,311 in 1940; 9,106 ha; municipal website) is located 70 km north-west of Cáceres.

Acehúche was first mentioned in 1244. The village was probably seized by the Christians a few years before the conquest of Alcántara. No trace of Hispano-Muslim presence was found in Acehúche; the name of the village, meaning "a wild olive-tree" in Astur-Leonese (Spanish, acebuche), confirms it was established from scratch by Leonese colonists.
In the 14th century, Acehúche was the seat of a commandery of the Order of Alcántara, which allowed the set up of a local council and the incorporation of the inhabitants of depopulated villages.
Acehúche was granted the status of villa in 1573 by Philip II.
