City of Schwarzenbek

Description of flag: The ratio is 3:5. The yellow sheet is twice divided by black, wavy, horizontal lines. Between the lines is a black, rampant wolf tongued red.

Meaning: Schwarzenbek was generated around 1250 by forest clearance on the border between Saxons and Slaves. The wolf is taken from the arms of the Wulf family, who was part of the Lauenburgian nobility. He also symbolizes the difficulties of the first settlers, their endurance, force and vigilance. The Wulf family gained the epithet "Swartenbeke", which is a local creek with very dark water (German: Schwarzenbek), which was considered as black. Thus the two wavy lines are canting elements. Gold (= yellow) and black are the historical colours of the Duchy of Lauenburg. Schwarzenbek gained flag and arms together with the city rights. Source: Reißmann 1997, p.315 and Stadler 1970, p.109

Flag and coat of arms were approved on 15 June 1953. The artist is Wilhelm Horst Lippert from Brunsbüttel.
