Lauingen Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale of Argent and Azure charged with a negro´s head Sable with coronet, earring and necklace Or.
Meaning:
Lauingen had been part of the royal estates of the Staufen kin, whose colours are also those of the banner. The first seal is known by prints since 1270 and displayed a curly and bearded head of a king, wearing a royal crown (not a coronet). The design changed in the 15th century, now displaying a half length portrait of a man without beard and a leafy coronet. The necklace ws added in the 16th century. The head of a negro first appeared in paintings in 1545 and on seals in 1560. The tinctures had been blue and red first. Blue and silver were introduced in 1818 as colours of the Wittelsbach kin. The head in the past was associated with Jesus Christ, a Hun warrior or the Marshals of Pappenheim, whose family arms also displayed a negro´s head.
