Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (=white) field is a red castle having a bigger central tower topped by a dome and flanked by two smaller embattled towers. The embattled wall is interrupted by a silver (=white), open double gate.
Meaning:
According to Veddeler 2003, p.105 the castle could be found on the city's main seal from the 17th century. According to Ralf Hartemink the arms are canting, because the name of the city is derived from the word "Burke" (Engl.: castle). This information is reconfirmed by Stadler 1972, p.28.
Klaus-Michael Schneider, 26 Jun 2010

Flag, banner and coat of arms were approved by Regierungspräsident Münster on 22 April 1970.
