Description

The history of the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Sydney, Australia can be found at their webpage. The defacement on the blue ensign is the clubs rendition of a ducal coronet. The placement of the coronet in the lower 1/8 fly end is correct and intentional according to a club member. The RPAYC also sent a picture of their ensign that verifies placement.

Variant

John Lancer had me draw up a different crown based on a photo that he provided [seen at the top of the page]. Anyway, during my visit to Australia last month, I had the pleasure of visiting with John Vaughan. John's flag company Australiana Flags has made ensigns for the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, and John has a photo of the ensign catalogued in an immaculate photo library of flags. In John's photo, the ducal coronet is clearly of the more standard variety [depicted above].

So, my guess is that the club utilizes ensigns containing both crowns as we have photographic evidence of both.

Burgee

The burgee contains a St. Edward's crown which is also correct.
