Description of the flag

Municipal flag design for the city of Bellingham, Washington, designed by Bradley James Lockhart of Lariat Creative in accordance with the principles of vexillology.

This design won a contest hosted by the Downtown Bellingham Partnership and was first raised in March of 2016. It has since been adopted by the Port of Bellingham, flown by dozens of local businesses, and is proudly displayed by hundreds of citizens.

In 2019, Bradley Lockhart created the Pride version of the city flag [1]. The basic design is the same, but the four stripes are now in red, orange, yellow and green (top down), while the hoist shape is divided horizontally, purple above blue, all six rainbow colors thus being employed. The flag was originally created as a means to raise money for the Sean Humphrey House, a local nursing home for HIV positive people [1, 2] and is frequently used at the local Pride events [3-6]. While the flag is produced with the ratio of either 2:3 or 3:5, just like the city flag [7], the currently available photos suggest that the first of those prevails in use [3-6].
