It is a fairily typical portuguese municipal flag, 
with the coat of arms centered on a background 
white and red gyronny (city 
rank). These arms and flag were adopted upon the upgrade of the 
municipality seat to city status in 1988.03.11 (though apparently not made 
official yet) and are a trivial change of the former arms and 
flag.

The arms are Vert on a counterchief wavy of Argent and Vert semy of fish 
Sable and below a Christian king’s head in dexter chief and a Moorish 
king’s head in sinister chief a sailship Gules dressed Argent casting a net Or 
over the waves. Mural crown argent with five visible towers 
(city rank) and white scroll reading in black 
upper case letters "Vila Real de Santo António".
Meaning:
Both heads are typical for many communes located in the Algarve.

Adopted and published in the official journal 
Diário do Governo : I 
Série in 1932.07.02; these included the 
usual town attributes, four visible crown tower, 
and a quartered background of white and red.

Vila Real de Santo António municipality had 17 956 inhabitants 
in 2001 and consists of 3 communes covering 
57,53 km². It is part of Faro District, 
traditional province, 1999 ref. adm. region, current C.C.R. / NUTS II, and 
NUTS III Algarve.
