The municipality of Lajeado (84,014 inhabitants in 2019; 9,159 ha) is located 
100 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Lajeado was established on 20 March 
1855 by Antônio Fialho de Vargas as Conventos colony, on plots designed in 1853 
by the land surveyor Carl Ernst Mützel from Fazenda dos Conventos. The colony 
was settled in 1862 by German immigrants after the building of a mill.
The 
municipality of Lajeado was established on 26 January 1891 and inaugurated on 25 
February 1891. The municipalities of Guaporé, Encantado, Arroio do Meio, 
Cruzeiro do Sul, Boqueirão do Leão, Progresso, Santa Clara do Sul, Sério, 
Marques de Souza, Forquetinha and Canudos do Vale subsequently separated from 
Lajeado.

The flag of Lajeado is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 2,641 
promulgated on 27 April 1973.
Article 2.
The format of the flag shall 
obey the relevant federal legislation, with three horizontal stripes, the first, 
celestial blue, three central, white, and the lower, red, and charged in the 
center with the coat of arms of the municipality in the colors approved by Law 
No. 1,&75 promulgated on 6 July 1965.

The coat of arms of Lajeado is prescribed by 
Municipal Law No. 1,175 promulgated on 6 July 1965.
Article 1.
A 
Portuguese shield surmounted by a four-towered crown or. In chief, on a field 
argent, a Cross of the Christ gules (red) filled or. In the center, on a field 
vert (green), a farmer with a rustic plow and an oxen or, in the background, 
also vert, the Conventos hill. In base five wavy, parallel stripe, in turn 
argent and blue (azure), charged with letters and numbers or. The shield 
supported by a tobacco plant and a maize plant the two proper.
