Background

Sir Ernest Oppenheimer founded the Anglo American Corporation in 1917 with financial backing from the American bank, J.P. Morgan & Co. and 1 million raised from UK and US sources to start a gold mining
company on the Witwatersrand near Johannesburg.  This fact is reflected in the name of the company. Today its main major business units are:
- Anglo Gold Ashanti (official website)
- De Beers (official website )
- Anglo American Kumba (official website)
- Anglo American Platinum (official website).
