Mozirje had municipality status before the 1990s.

In 1996, the municipality of Rečica ob Savinji seceded from the municipality of Mozirje. Since the arms of the former municipality of Mozirje included attributes representing Rečica ob Savinji, new symbols had to be designed for the new, smaller municipality of Mozirje.

The new flag and arms of Mozirje are prescribed by Decision Odlok o spremembi Odloka o grbu in zastavi Občine Mozirje, adopted on 31 May 20066 and published on 13 June 2006 in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 61/2006, with effect on 1 January 2007, when the two new municipalities were actually set up.

The flag is horizontally divided blue-green with a thin white stripe in the middle and the municipal coat of arms offset near the hoist.
The vertical version of the flag has the coat of arms rotated properly.

The flag and arms of Mozirje are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Mozirje, adopted on 2 February 1996 and published on 9 December 1996 in the official local gazette Uradno glasilo Zgornjesavinjskih občin, 9/1996.

The symbols of Mozirje were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.

The flag is vertically hoisted, in proportions 5:2, horizontally divided invected in blue and yellow fimbirated green. The division line is dividing flag fields in 2:3. and there are three semicircles forming invected division line "entering" the blue square field.
The green fimbriation is described in the Decision to have black outlines, but Valt Jurečič's images does not show such outlines.

The Decision prescribes the flag to be always hoisted vertically or slanted at most to 45 degrees. However, Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] show the horizontal version.

The colour specifications, not included in the Decision, are given by Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05] as:
- Yellow: Pantone Yellow
- Dark yellow: Pantone 116
- Green: Pantone 355
- Blue: Pantone 293
- Red: Pantone 185
- Black: Pantone Black

The coat of arms of Mozirje is blue with a yellow triple hill fimbriated green atop of which is a red roofed white church, and in base of the hill a linden tree proper issuant from a green mount.
The triple hill fimbriation is described in the Decision as green with a black outline twice as thick as the outlines used in the rest of the coat of arms, but Valt Jurečič's images does not show such a fimbriation.
The church is probably the representation of some real church in Mozirje. The linden tree is the national tree of Slovenia.

The current municipality of Mozirje is composed of two historical towns, Mozirje and Rečica, each having a historical coat of arms. The arms of Mozirje show a church (castle) on a triple mount, whereas the arms of Rečica have a green linden tree on a golden shield. The towns requested a municipal coat of arms that would include elements of both town arms. Valt consulted (among others) two of his colleagues, Dr. Medvedjev of St. Petersburg and Ing. Alexy from Bratislava, who agreed with the heraldical suitability of this solution.
This composed coat of arms could not have been reused on a flag, since none of the attributes would have been allowed precedence on the flag. Therefore, the flag is unique among Slovenian municipal flags since it does not show any attribute of a coat of arms.

Zalokar [zal90] shows, as a suggestion, the coat of arms he meant should be adopted, that is the historical coat of arms of the town of Mozirje.
A coat of arms very similar to Zalokar's proposal was eventually adopted by the municipality, since it was being used on the car licence plates since their adoption in early 1990s until the adoption of the current symbols in mid-1990s. This old coat of arms can still be seen on most of the cars registered in Mozirje except for the newest cars that already have the current coat of arms.
The historical coat of arms is: "Azure on a triple hill vert a church argent between two houses also argent all roofed gules".
This design was retained, with slight artistical modifications, in the current coat of arms.
