It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field gyronny (meaning city rank) of green and yellow.

The coat of arms is argent, a fess sable charged with three pomegranates shelled or and fruited gules, between three grape bunches vert, two in chief and one in base. Mural crown argent with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA NOVA DE FAMALICÃO".
